Configure Preferences
Configure Preferences[edit | edit source]
Select File ⇒ Application Preferences from the top bar menu.Configuration[edit | edit source]
Select the Configuration icon in the left vertical menu. Review the settings below. It's recommended that these settings remain as default settings.
General[edit | edit source]
Startup[edit | edit source]
- Welcome:
- You can turn the splashscreen on and off.
- Language:
- GUI Language: Seamly2D will use your computer's operating system region/locale to select a language for translating GUI text and measurement names. If none of the supported languages match your locale, Seamly2D will default to English.
- Decimal Separator parts: Your operating system's locale will default to either a comma "," or period "." as the numeric decimal separator. You may override the default. You cannot use both separators in a formula at the same time.
- Default Unit: Centimeters (cm), Millimeters (mm) or Inches (in). This unit is used when creating new patterns in Seamly2D and new measurement files in SeamlyMe
- Point name text: Seamly2D will use the alphabetic symbols associated with this language to generate the labels for pattern points.

Editing[edit | edit source]
- Undo:
- Count Steps: Default is 0 (unlimited). We recommend leaving at 0 until you learn more about Seamly2D. If your system is slow reduce to 50, then in steps down to 15 for speed improvement. We don't recommend less than 15.
- Selection Sound:
- Sound: You can select one of several sound or stay silent
- Pattern Editing Warnings:
- You can switch warnings on and off
- Operations Default Suffix:

- Enable Autosave:
- Interval: Default is checked with a 1 minute interval. Seamly2D will save your pattern file every few minutes to a file with '.autosave' file extension. It is recommended to leave these values at default settings.

Pattern[edit | edit source]
Pattern Piece[edit | edit source]
- Properties: You can configure the default settings for new pattern pieces. You can change the settings for each pattern piece afterwards:
- Show Cut Line: Default is checked. This setting shows the line to be cut after the seam allowance is added. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Hide Seam Path: Default is un-checked. This setting prevents the seamline from showing on the pattern pieces under Detail or Layout once a seam allowance had been added.
- Forbid Flipping: Default is un-checked. This setting prevents pattern pieces to be flipped or reversed during the creation of the layout image. When a pattern piece is reversed, the labels will not be reversed. This can be confusing when placing pattern pieces on fabric. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
Notches[edit | edit source]
- Properties:
- Show notch on Cut Line: Default is un-checked. Check this box if you want that notches will be added on the cutline and included in the layout image. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Show second notch on Seam Line: Default is un-checked. Check this box if you want notches to be added on the seamline and included in the layout image. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Attributes:
- Type: Default is Slit. Diamond is what the "big four" American pattern companies use.
- Color: Default is black.
- Length: Default is 0.250. How far should the notches stick from their bases on the cut-line?
- Width: Default is 0.250. How wide/far apart should the notch marks be?
Grainlines[edit | edit source]
- Properties:
- Show grainlines: Default is checked. Check this box if you want show or hide the grainline in the layout image. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Length: Default is 2.000. Define the length of the grainline.
- Color: Default is black.
- Lineweight: Default is 0.250. How thick should the grainline be?
Paths[edit | edit source]
- Seam allowance:
- Default value: The default width of auto-generated seam allowances.
- Paths: Define the default values for the Seamline, Cutline, Internals and Cutouts:
- Color: Default is black.
- Linetype: Default is solidline.
- Lineweight: Default is 0.250. How thick should the grainline be?
Labels[edit | edit source]
- Properties:
- Show pattern labels: Default is checked. Check this box if you want show the pattern label in the layout image. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Show piece labels: Default is checked. Check this box if you want show the piece label in the layout image. This setting can also be applied to each pattern piece in Details mode.
- Width: Default is 3.000.
- Height: Default is 2.000.
- Color: Default is black.
- Label data/time format:
- Date: This drop menu contains a number of different date formats. Whether you prefer day-first, month-first or year-first, there's an option for you.
- Time: Do you prefer 24hr time, or am/pm (AP)? Do you want to print your patterns with the exact second you created the layout, or is minute close enough? There are only four options.
- Templates:
- Pattern label: Define and select a default pattern label.
- Piece label: Define and select a default piece label.
File Paths[edit | edit source]
Paths[edit | edit source]
Seamly2D creates your Seamly2D base directory in your user home directory. It's recommended to leave the default directories unchanged.
Your seamly2d base directory:
- Windows: C:\Users\username\seamly2d.
- Linux: $home/$username/seamly2d.
- Mac OSX:
For Windows, the directories will default to:
- My Individual Measurements: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2d\measurements\individual.
- My Multisize Measurements: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2d\measurements\tables\multisize.
- My Patterns: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2d\patterns.
- My Layouts: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2D\layouts.
- My Templates: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2D\templates.
- My Label Templates: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2D\label templates.
- My Images: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2D\images.
- My Backups: <your seamly2d base directory>\seamly2D\backups. Adds a “My Backups” file path preference to where a user wants to store backups, and creates a default directory if it does not exist when the app runs.
Graphics[edit | edit source]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
It's recommended to leave the Graphics settings at their default values.
- Toolbars:
- Text labels appear under the icon: Defaults to checked. Text labels appear under the tool and menu icons. When unchecked, the labels don't appear.
- Show tool toolbars:
- Toolbox: Defaults to checked.
- Point: Defaults to checked.
- Line: Defaults to checked.
- Curve: Defaults to checked.
- Arc: Defaults to checked.
- Operations: Defaults to checked.
- Piece: Defaults to checked.
- Details: Defaults to checked.
- Layout: Defaults to checked.
- Dialogs:
- You will now be able to set a preference for the posistion of where you want tool dialogs to open up on the screen
- Open on second monitor if available: Defaults to unchecked. If possible the dialogs will open on the second screen
- Position
- Top left: Defaults to unchecked
- Top right: Defaults to unchecked
- Center: Defaults to checked
- Botoom left: Defaults to unchecked
- Bottom right: Defaults to unchecked
- Offset: Defaults to unchecked
- You can select an x:y offset to position the top left corner of the dialog box anywhere on the screen. If the offsets entered are greater than width or height of the screen - dialog, then the width or height of the screen - dialog is used to keep it on the screen. To enable the offset spinboxes you just select the Offset radio button.
- X Offset: Offset in pixel. Default set to 0
- Y Offset: Offset in pixel. Default set to 0
- Graphical Output:
- Use Anti-aliasing: Defaults to checked. This setting eliminates jagged lines. We recommend using anti-aliasing. Read more about anti-aliasing on Wikipedia.
Fonts:[edit | edit source]
Choose your fonts for some GUI-Elements:
- Label: Default settings for the labels in your pieces.
- Point Names: Default settings for the point in draft mode.
- GUI: This preset influence some text, eg. listviewitems in piece properties.
Colors[edit | edit source]
- Zoom Rubberband:
- Positive: defaults to blue.
- Negative: defaults to green.
- Point Names:
- Default: defaults to black.
- Hover: defaults to black.
- Drawing:
- Axis Origin: defaults to black.
- Selection:
- Primary: defaults to Magenta.
- Secondary: defaults to Forest Green.
- Tertiary: defaults to Navy.
Navigation[edit | edit source]
- Scrollbars:
- Show Scrollbar:
- Scrollbar Width: Defaults to 10px.
- Duration: Defaults to 300ms.
- Update Interval: Defaults to 30ms.
- Speed: Defaults to halfway point between "Slow" and "Fast".

- Zoom to selected with double-click: Defaults to checked.

- Quality: defines the export quality of your pieces.
